Are you a young parent who’s still finding his/her footing? Is your child still in his formative years??

You may not have thought of this yet, but your child will be a teenager in just 3-4 years from now ! And not just that, when he graduates from college a decade from now, the world would be a very different place.

Ever think of the future your son/daughter might grow in?

Fast forward a decade from now, the world will be far more integrated with technology than what we can imagine off. It will be an automation-driven world where most of our activities will be taken over by some kind of artificial intelligence. The world would be one where there will be harmony in industrial activity rather than endless assembly lines filled with inefficient human labour.

In such a world, what will be the kind of jobs that humans, and by humans we mean your children be employable in? That is the Million dollar question with no right answers !

Are we headed towards joblessness as a planetary crisis ?

Well, if current predictions are to be believed, most of the jobs that today require a human presence are likely to go robotic by the turn of 2020s. This would mean that several white collar professions are likely to go defunct simply because robots can do them better.

However, what is likely to be more interesting is that entry roles are going to take a hard beating as well. Jobs such as "Engineer Trainees", "Analysts", "Production Engineer", "Testing Engineers" or any job that just requires just a fancy memory and rote application is likely to go under axe.

And if the current signs are to go by, the situation has already taken a worse turn with several Indians IT firms laying off employees after automating the processes. What is horryifying is that in the year 2017 alone, IT firms in India are expected to carry out the largest retrenchment drive with 7 of the biggest companies including Infosys, Wipro and Cognizant planning to lay off 56,000 engineers by the end of this year.

So, what are the jobs that will remain when robots take over?

Well, since robots are going to be the be the bottom feeders of the Job market, the top predators are still going to be humans who are capable of creating technologies that can replace obsolete employees and automate inefficient processes ! What we mean by that is that tech related jobs are still likely to remain unharmed.

And there seems to substantial proof too !

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment in occupations related to STEM is projected to grow to more than 9 million between 2012 and 2022. And the Global Stem Alliance estimates that 75% of all jobs will require STEM expertise by 2018.

So, What should be your first move as a parent?

Well, STEM is clearly where the future looks towards as most of the automated jobs would require a human mastermind to improve them and maintain them.

This means that if your Son or Daughter is currently showing signs of interest in science or tech-related fields, then you as a parent have a duty to nurture their interest in that domain because that is where most of the jobs are going to be !

To begin the same, it will be prudent to expose children to various STEM-related activities and help them develop a liking for the field in a fun manner so that their careers are shaped by the same.
