In December 2016, Elon Musk tweeted out that traffic in LA was driving him nuts, and that he was going to get a tunnel boring machine and "just start digging." While it seemed like a possible joke at the time, it turns out that Elon Musk is that rare person with the mechanical know-how, municipal influence, and financial means to just start boring a tunnel under Los Angeles, and the Boring Company was born.
More recently, a picture of the Boring Company's tunnel boring machine leaked, and we got our first real look at what the company is up to. The budding infrastructure venture also released a concept video showing a futuristic transportation system where cars drive onto electric sleds, which then descend underground via elevators and fly down a track through the tunnel.
On May 12th however, Musk released a video of a real electric sled flying down a tunnel on a monorail track for a test run. According to Musk, these sleds will carry cars and their passengers at 125 mph, allowing Westwood residents to travel to LAX in just 5 minutes.
